Chapter 15

“I’m glad you are better,” Sabine finally said to Yanik. He seemed stiff and angry.

“Thanks, you too,” he said curtly.

There was a rickshaw waiting for them outside the door. Yanik helped Sabine in and then climbed up next to her. The seat was narrow, and they were forced to sit close to each other. The driver began pulling them through the streets and Sabine distracted herself by looking at all the houses and people.

“Did Lansa fill you in on everything?” Yanik asked.

Sabine groaned. “She made me memorize and practice everything.”

“Good,” Yanik said.

“You were joking about not getting out alive, right?” Sabine said quietly.

Yanik turned his head to look her in the eye. “Did Mit tell you what she used to do?”

Sabine nodded.

Yanik took a deep breath, and to give himself more room, draped his arm around the back of the rickshaw and Sabine’s shoulders.

“She is very good at,” Yanik waved his free hand to indicate Sabine’s dress and makeup. “But she forgets that Breeders have a certain amount of protection, you will not.”

Sabine looked down and noted the swell of her breasts and the long slit exposing her legs and felt very vulnerable. She bit her lip and tried to cover herself.

Yanik grabbed her hand and held it. He looked at her. “Your mother did what she could to protect you from men, she was right to do it. Mit was trained to make men attracted to her, but she forgets the risks it brings. You will have to be very strong and smart tonight.”

“Do you think I will be attacked?”

Yanik laughed. “Yes. You will be attacked with flattery, flirting, bribes, offers and so much more. My concern is what will happen when you say ‘no’. I can’t be there to always protect you and some responses you may want to try will not be appropriate. We both have responsibilities.” Yanik gave Sabine a look that reminded her he was going to the party to kill a man, at some point he would need an alibi or a cover.

“I won’t let you down,” Sabine said. “And I can take care of myself.”

“That’s what I’m afraid of.” Yanik squeezed her hand and gave her a thin smile.

The trip to the port was winding and by the time they finally arrived at the docks, Sabine was feeling queasy. “Thank Brahma, that is over,” she said. Yanik took her hand and helped her step down from the rickshaw. He tossed her wrap around her shoulders and led her to the boat waiting for them. The sun was about to drop. The flat bottom boat they were boarding had been decorated with delicate lanterns that spread lacey patterns across the covered benches. Several couples were already on board and gave polite nods to them as they sat down. A man came by to collect their invitations and check papers. Sabine sighed when he handed their fake id back with a courteous nod.

Sabine sat with her hands folded in her lap. Yanik made small talk and pointed out the stars and lights.
